Lead and iron weight. Cast discoid weight with the ends of an embedded ferrous object visible in opposite sides. Patinated overall. The mass may suggest this to represent a [slightly overweight] Viking Age ora/ore of c.24gms. Alternatively, or perhaps simultaneously, this may represent six Scandinavian sub-units of 4.07gms for the measurement of bullion. The use of such weights in this period is being explored by Dave Haldenby and Jane Kershaw in the light of finds from Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire. Weights with embedded objects are a long-accepted class of Early Medieval object, …

Copper alloy with enamel mount. Cast symmetrical mount comprising a central hexagonal plate flanked by opposed elongated collared lugs, each with a drilled attachment hole of diameter 3mm. The plate bears the device of three cinquefoil florets springing from a small tapered receptacle against a parti-coloured enamel ground, mid blue to the right and [now] green to the left. The object is now gently curved. The decorative use of enamel was especially characteristic of 13th-century Limoges work, while the three flowers could allude to the Holy Trinity. Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Greenstone polished axe, reworked into waisted form. Polished Group 6 axehead fragment comprising a crescentic cutting edge and c.30mm of the original sides of the axe meeting its ends. Beyond this point, pecking has transformed a probable originally oval form of lentoid section by forming a marked waist or in-swing. This might have facilitated a tied fastening, though its security was perhaps compromised by loss or damage to the butt end, which is probably truncated and certainly fractured. The waisted form recurs on a polished axe dated to between the Later Neolithic and Early Bronz…

Lead cloth seal. Pair of cast discs linked by sprue and clamped together. One side bears the motif of a bishop's mitre within a tressure with trefoils or lis on its cusps. The other side bears a W (or possibly M) with an annulet on either side within a pelleted circle. Patinated overall. Copper alloy vessel fragment. Concavo-convex naturalistically modelled paw of a lion, with a circular lug with drilled hole of diameter 3mm for attachment to a small bowl, serving as one of its feet. The light construction of the piece, with detail retained as a negative impression on the hollow back, suggests this may be from a decorative item of tableware in Neo-Classical style.
