An incomplete and corroded post-Medieval copper-alloy and gilded anthropomorphic mount (1600-1700).
The mount is broadly pear-shaped in plan (pointed end at the bottom) with a finial at the top and a three-pointed splayed terminal at the bottom. Moulded decoration at the front is in the form of a plain border enclosing a human mask. The mask has a severe expression and has a distinctive fringe. The rear face is plain and slightly concave and has two integral spikes along the longitudinal centre-line, one at each end. These spikes are incomplete and only the stubs survive.
The object is drab green with traces of gilding at the front.
Height: 37.8mm; width: 20.4mm; thickness of plate: 3.5mm; thickness including stubs: 3.7mm. Weight: 6.03g.
Similar mounts have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. See finds: BH-4BC6C6; BH-A82FF3; IOW-19AA71; IOW-41C1F3; IOW-71F3B1 and PUBLIC-8A2090.
