The two legs are joined by an integral sub-triangular platform with a central circular perforation which is incomplete due to breaks. The breaks again are not recent. The surface of the item has a well developed mid green patina. It measures…

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Greenstone polished axe, reworked into waisted form. Polished Group 6 axehead fragment comprising a crescentic cutting edge and c.30mm of the original sides of the axe meeting its ends. Beyond this point, pecking has transformed a probable originally oval form of lentoid section by forming a marked waist or in-swing. This might have facilitated a tied fastening, though its security was perhaps compromised by loss or damage to the butt end, which is probably truncated and certainly fractured. The waisted form recurs on a polished axe dated to between the Later Neolithic and Early Bronz…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Published
Neolithic, patinated off white flint, leaf shaped arrow head, fashioned from a secondary flake off a beach pebble. It has been bifacially worked with removals to 80% of its surface. The centre of the ventral appears to retain a polished surface. This may be a fortuitous result of some form of flaking, but there are no sign of conchoidal rippling so this is unlikely to be the result of artificial flaking. There is a central retained patch of cortex on the dorsal side. Dorsal retouch invasive, sub-parallel, low angled; ventral retouch invasive, parallel, low angled. Dates from c3500 to …

Part of a cast lead alloy, toy gun of late Post-Medieval or Modern date, probably AD 1850 - 1900. Only the stock survives; the rest has broken away and is missing. The stock is hollow cast, becoming solid at the break, where the trigger guard would have been. The lower portion of the stock has scrolled floral designs on either side while the upper stock, which protrudes from a mouth-like moulding, is decorated with cross hatching. Toy guns were popular from the late 17th century and some examples even fired. This is probably a late example dating from about AD 1850- 1900. It has a cr…

A lead alloy impacted probable pistol ball of post-Medieval date, AD 1600 - 1850. The ball has been fired and has struck a solid object as it is now a in the shape of a flattened disc with a slightly thicker centre. It is characteristic of balls that have struck a hard flat rough surface at high velocity and can be compared to examples in Harding (2012, Lead Short of the English Civil war: a Radical Study, plate 25). The leading face displays a pattern of radiating striations. The rear face of the ball shows a raised ring of metal. This is possible the result of being fired from a "Tu…
