Fire-damaged Roman disc brooch dating from the Roman period, c. AD100-300. The brooch is extremely worn. Originally the object would have been circular in plan and it would have featured a circular border around an inlaid glass stone which is molten in the fire. The border is gilded with good preservation. TThe back of the brooch is flat and undecorated with no evidence of gilding. The pin rest and the hinge for the pin are still in place although everything is very damaged and distorted. The pin is missing, but the spring and its mechanisn are still visible through the iron corrosion…

Incomplete Roman tin-coated copper alloy Colchester Derivative Hinged brooch with an iron axis bar, all but the top of the pin and most of the catchplate missing. The wings and the D-sectioned bow are entirely decorated with (rather abraded) bead and reel mouldings. The bow ends in a narrow foot, cf. Hattatt 2000, fig. 158, no. 364. Tinning survives only in small patches on both sides of the bow/head junction. Mackreth 2011 CD H 8. Wingspan 36mm. Length 46mm. c.55 - c.80.
