A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount (c. 1300-c. 1400). The central part of this mount is oval in plan, domed at the front and concave at the rear. At each end there is an integral sub-oval terminal, convex at the front and flat at the rear. Each terminal is pierced for a separate rivet. Both rivets are in situ and are made of copper-alloy. At the front the rivets are flush with the surface and stubs protrude slightly at the rear. The upper surface of the central oval part is decorated with four horizontal grooves which have created a series of raised ridges; these rid…

Post-medieval copper alloy harness mount with a pair of integral round-sectioned attachment spikes on the reverse. The form is that of a teardrop with three lobes around the rounded end and a central aperture of the same shape. The almost flat front face carries very faint moulded counter-relief decoration apparently consisting of lines of pellets between grooves. Two lateral lobes are part circular and that at the terminal is grooved and probably intended to represent a shell. A similar piece from Surrey is slightly smaller (SUR-E19F51) as is one from Doncaster with rivet holes in th…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Early Medieval Irish mount, cast copper alloy. The mount is T-shaped formed of a rectangular bar with a pelta-shaped projection on one side. The rectangular panel contains interlace decoration with a cross in the centre. Some traces of gilding remain. On the back of the mount are the remains of two attachments. The shape and general decoration of this object may be compared to mounts from the 'near Navan' hoard (Youngs 1989, 117, Catalogue Number 113) and from Stoma, Norway (ibid. 118, Catalogue Number 114 a-e) for which an eighth-ninth century date was suggested. This object is likel…
