Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy spindle whorl of possible Early Medieval date, about AD 500 - 600. It is conical and has a central, circular hole of 6mm diameter. It is 19.7mm in diameter and 10.4mm high. It weighs 17.6gm. The lead has a creamy white patina. Similar whorls are discussed in Walton Rogers (2007). She suggests that this shape and central holes of a diametre of 6-9mm are more likely to be 6th century in date. However, neither feature is a reliable dating technique, so a later date is also possible.

It consists of two sections of a divided, copper alloy neck and a rowel of six points. The outer ends of the neck are pierced to take a copper alloy pin on which the rowel is mounted; this pin remains in place. The outer sides of the neck are decorated with shallow, diagonal grooves which give the effect of twisted wire (barley twist). The points of the rowel are cast into a similar spiral effect design, like a narwhal tusk. All the elements appear to be made of copper alloy and have a …

A badly corroded copper alloy annular buckle probably of a type called a disc-on-pin brooch. It has a corroded circular frame with a constriction for the pin. An unusual feature of the frame is two recesses on the reverse of the frame. These would have held a separate narrow bar, which would have divided the circle in half, forming a cross with the pin. The pin and bar do not survive except for a tiny fragment of one end of the bar which is copper alloy but of a different composition to the frame. Other brooches with an additional bar also have an elaborate pin with a disc or ring mou…
