A cast, lead alloy artefact, possibly a fragment of a badge of Medieval or post-Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1800. It is roughly square in shape with rounded corners, but the edges are likely to be broken, though they are worn. Protruding from one corner is a small spur of metal, perhaps once part of another element that has now broken away and is missing. The underside of the artefact is undecorated. It is thicker in the centre. Possibly this is two layers of metal, perhaps a projecting tab which has been bent over and flattened against the main object. A groove on each side if the…

A lead alloy toy watch dating from the late 17th or 18th century. it is circular and convex on both faces, though damage has caused a depression in both faces. The edge round the top of the watch face is missing, revealing the two pieces that form the watch and the hollow inside. Both sides have the same design: a beaded edge, a band of ornate foliage decoration in relief, including large C scrolls, and then another row of beading before the clock face in the center. The numerals are Roman and are enclosed within raised bands. The inner face is plain, and the hands are cast in reli…

A cast, lead alloy artefact, possibly a badge of Medieval or early post-Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1600. It is in the shape of a small anchor. The underside is flat and the upper sides of the stock, shank and arms are bevelled. One of the arms has broken away and is missing (the break is patinated), and the other has been bent sideways up towards the stock or cross bar. There is no evidence of mounting points on the underside, not any other form of attachment, suggesting it was originally sewn in place by wrapping thread round the object. The lack of any perforation makes it unlik…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A circular, cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date, but probably Medieval or post-Medieval, about AD 1400 - 1800. It is in the shape of a shallow dome with a convex upper side and a flat base. It is possible that there is a design of three lions passant on the upper side, with only the upper of the three lions being discernable, but extensive patinated damage and wear makes this uncertain. There are also three parallel lines scored across the centre of the upper side. These appear to be deliberate but may have been caused by contact with farming machinery. The weight has a mass of 1…

A Post Medieval iron ring from a foot patten dating from about AD 1720 - 1900. The patten component has an oval ring of rectangular section, a raised platform at the heel where there is a trapezoidal attachment plate with two rivet holes and one iron rivet surviving, and a raised "cooking pot" shped attachment plate at the toe containing the remains of a single rivet and with a broken projection at the front. A patten of this design can be seen on page 56 of Detector Finds 2 by Gordon Bailey. Compare also SUR-F987B0, DEV-9DC3B5 and SUSS-A122D3 which note that: "Goodall, I (1973:63) co…
