Record ID: SWYOR-A79DD4
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A circular, cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date, but probably Medieval or post-Medieval, about AD 1400 - 1800. It is in the shape of a shallow dome with a convex upper side and a flat base. It is possible that there is a design of three lions passant on the upper side, with only the upper of the three lions being discernable, but extensive patinated damage and wear makes this uncertain. There are also three parallel lines scored across the centre of the upper side. These appear to be deliberate but may have been caused by contact with farming machinery. The weight has a mass of 1…

Lead weight. Cast conical or plano-convex weight with a flat top and base, nicked and dented. The unpatinated state suggests a relatively recent date, while the mass may suggest this to have represented one half of an averedepois ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850. Diameter: 16.2mm, Height: 12.6mm, Weight: 14.77gms.

She suggests that this shape and central holes of a diametre of 6-9mm are more likely to be 6th century in date. However, neither feature is a reliable dating technique, so a later date is also possible.

A copper alloy pin of possible Medieval date. It has a discoidal head with a convex top and a flat base. The shaft is 0.8mm in diameter and only 10mm survives. The original length is impossible to judge. The pin is similar to some in Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories, but an earlier or later date cannot be ruled out. The function of this pin is also unknown.
