Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Brooch. Cast Dragonesque Brooch, Mackreth type DRAG 3.ax.Cast S shaped concavo-convex plate brooch with a cast pin wrapped around the 'neck'. The 'head' has a prominent oval lug adjacent to a bowl shaped hollow which may have held a separate stud. The body has decoration comprising a longitudinally divided pair of pointed ended cells, and is overlain by a central quatrefoil; these features appear apt to retain enamel though no colorant now remains. The 'tail' end of the brooch, presumably a near-symetrical pair with the 'head', is lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, 85-100…

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible Razor. Sub-triangular blade with a straight flat back and a blade now tapering to a point, possibly because of recurrent sharpening. Towards the other end of the blade it now narrows, though this is possibly the result of damage in antiquity; it has a straight and possibly original end here. This object appears to have been robustly cleaned by the finder. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 56.7mm, Width: 11.6mm, Thickness: 1.4mm, Weight: 4.17gms.

Object type: RAZOR
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy probable Razor. Cast U-shaped plate with a cutting edge which runs along one long edge and continuing along the short straight side; the other long side and the U shaped end are flattened. The section is of extremely flattened lentoid form, a point which is only apparent if it is viewed against a straight edge. This object was initially considered as a sword blade fragment, but it lacks any convincing strengthening of the middle part of the blade, and a single sided form would be unusual for a rapier. This object appears to have been robustly cleaned by the finder. Suggest…

Object type: STAPLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron Staple. Wrought Iron U-shaped staple, with a residual point at one end of one arm. The object generally enjoys unusually good survival which indicates that the section of the object was rounded, though where corrosion has caused flakes of iron to spall away it might be mistaken for a squared section. This object was probably discarded attached to a substantial timber. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length: 105mm, Width: 87mm, Diameter: 10.7mm, Weight: 80.18gms.

Iron File. Wrought iron whittle tanged tool of rectangular section, tapering towards a blunt or broken end at one end, and a pyramidal terminal to its tang at the other. The object is shouldered where it meets the tang, which presumably engaged a wooden handle. Faint traces of diagonal grooves on the four flat faces suggest the identification offered. The extensive survival of metal argues a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850. Length: 132.5mm, Width: 13.1mm, Thickness: 9.4mm, Weight: 52.63gms.

Lead Weight. Cast conical or plano-convex weight with a flat top and base, nicked and dented. The unpatinated state suggests a relatively recent date, while the mass may suggest this to have represented one half of an averedepois ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850. Lead possible Musket Ball. Cast shot, severely misshapen, perhaps in the process of firing as much by impact or subsequent damage, patinated overall, but of a mass over one averdepois ounce suggesting this may have been used for a muzzle loading firearm of military specification. This may have been part of a double shotted or multiple load. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 16.1mm, Length: 17.5mm, Weight: 29.56gms
