A badly corroded copper alloy annular buckle probably of a type called a disc-on-pin brooch. It has a corroded circular frame with a constriction for the pin. An unusual feature of the frame is two recesses on the reverse of the frame. These would have held a separate narrow bar, which would have divided the circle in half, forming a cross with the pin. The pin and bar do not survive except for a tiny fragment of one end of the bar which is copper alloy but of a different composition to the frame. Incomplete probably Middle Saxon to Late Saxon copper alloy strap fitting or buckle plate, a D-sectioned bar with two iron rivets, one through an ovoid terminal and the other before a bifurcation. Between the two the convex front is decorated with moulded chevrons that may constitite a stylised animal head. Beyond the bifurcation both incomplete narrow arms are decorated with three slight moulded swellings. Early Medieval lead alloy spindle whorl, Diameter: 27.0mm, thickness: 16.0mm, weight: 61.31g The whorl is circular in form and D shaped in cross section with a large circular hole through its centre. All surfaces are heavily pitted and scratched. The whorl fits Walton Rogers form A1, which she dates to 500-1000AD.

A cast copper alloy Roman brooch, dating from AD 100 - 400. It is a variant of the knee brooch type with a plate like head (the edges are broken so the original shape in unknown), a short bow and a fantail foot. Head, bow and foot are all of rectangular section. There is no decoration. On the underside of the head are two semi-circular lugs. These are pierced to take the pin bar. The remains of a ferrous pin bar can be seen in both of the lugs; the pin and bar itself is missing. a copper alloy shoe buckle with a maker's mark reading: "W / (W)OT(F)" on the chape. It dates from about AD 1690 - 1720. The frame is rectangular in plan and curved in profile. It is drilled for a separate iron spindle upon which is the copper alloy pin and stud chape. The stud from the chape is mssing, but was a separate piece rather than being integral. The maker's mark is stamped onto the chape. The buckle has a smooth grey shiny patina. Compare number 663 on page 103 of Whitehead's Buckles. This appears to be the first example of this maker on the database.
