Object type: STAPLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron staple. Wrought Iron U-shaped staple, with a residual point at one end of one arm. The object generally enjoys unusually good survival which indicates that the section of the object was rounded, though where corrosion has caused flakes of iron to spall away it might be mistaken for a squared section. This object was probably discarded attached to a substantial timber. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800.
Length: 105mm, Width: 87mm, Diameter: 10.7mm, Weight: 80.18gms.

Iron file. Wrought iron whittle tanged tool of rectangular section, tapering towards a blunt or broken end at one end, and a pyramidal terminal to its tang at the other. The object is shouldered where it meets the tang, which presumably engaged a wooden handle. Faint traces of diagonal grooves on the four flat faces suggest the identification offered. The extensive survival of metal argues a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1850.
