Copper alloy brooch. Cast dragonesque brooch, Mackreth type DRAG 3.ax.Cast S shaped concavo-convex plate brooch with a cast pin wrapped around the 'neck'. The 'head' has a prominent oval lug adjacent to a bowl shaped hollow which may have held a separate stud. The body has decoration comprising a longitudinally divided pair of pointed ended cells, and is overlain by a central quatrefoil; these features appear apt to retain enamel though no colorant now remains. The 'tail' end of the brooch, presumably a near-symetrical pair with the 'head', is lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, 85-100…

A cast copper alloy Roman brooch, dating from AD 100 - 400. It is a variant of the knee brooch type with a plate like head (the edges are broken so the original shape in unknown), a short bow and a fantail foot. Head, bow and foot are all of rectangular section. There is no decoration. On the underside of the head are two semi-circular lugs. These are pierced to take the pin bar. The remains of a ferrous pin bar can be seen in both of the lugs; the pin and bar itself is missing. Roman copper alloy strap-mounted terret of unusual form. The loop is slightly trapezoidal, being wider at the base than at the top. The ring, completely circular internally and externally, is deeply recessed on both faces. There is very little verdigris, the surfaces bearing for the most part the true colour of the metal. Height 54mm. Width of loop 23-5 - 24.5mm. Thickness of loop 5mm. Diameter of ring 40mm. Thickness of ring 7.5mm. c.43 - c.200 AD.
