Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northamptonshire

A small copper-alloy bird mount probably/possibly of Roman date. This artefact weighs 5.17g, has a length, from tip of beak to tip of tail, of 31.6mm, width of 6.2mm and has a height, probably/possibly incomplete, of 19.7mm.
The bird has a height, from tummy to head, of 14.3mm, the rest of the height being accounted for by the presence of an oval cross-sectioned projection directly below the body of the bird. Lead pencil; formerly termed a stylus fragment. Cast rod, apparently with mould line, with a neatly pointed end; the mould line appears to continue across the other end, though this would leave the length of an awkward pencil stub were this the full extent of the object. Patinated overall. The tidy finish might suggest an alternative dating; either earlier (than usual for this class of object) dating to the Roman period, to which two out of three accompanying objects date; or to more recent times. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800
