Irregular copper alloy as, 'Claudian copy', reverse standing figure, diameter 20.5mm, weight 1.52g, corroded but still very much underweight, c.AD50-70. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified as a contemporary copy, nor from an auxiliary mint/mint of R…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An Early Neolithic flint knapped arrowhead, probably dating to between 2150-1500 BC. The arrowhead has a sub-rectangular, dual-facetted platform, rather than a retouched proximal end, which would have allowed the arrowhead to be hafted easily to the arrowhead shaft. There are invasive, covering removals on what seems to be the distal face of the arrowhead, but the ventral face is mostly unretouched in the centre with just the mesial edges retouched in varying sizes from crude to fine retouch. The tip of the arrowhead at the distal end has broken off. The flint is of an even dark g

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Late Mesolithic - Neolithic flint knapped blade (6500-2100 BC). The blade is triangular in cross-section with a sharp central ridge and mesial edges, which seem to not be retouched save for two extremely small areas. The bulb of percussion is intact, along with ripples of percussion. The proximal dorsal face seems to have had some microlithic removals suggesting that this blade is possibly Mesolithic in date rather than Neolithic. The distal edge is wider and difficult to interpret as the distal end seems to have been truncated using a hinge fracture, but there are further facets…

Copper alloy sestertius of Hadrian (AD 117-38), Reece period 6, RESTITVTOR ORBIS TERRARVM SC reverse type, minted in Rome, c.AD 119-121; cf RIC II, p.416, no.594a-b The coin has an applied black coating that has been painted over an earlier corrosion layer in the past, perhaps to define the details of the coin, which has since been abrasively removed in order to age the coin. The coating has not broken down, shrunk or crazed as it has aged, which suggests that it is relatively modern (Laura Ratcliffe pers comm). This sort of dark layer of corrosion has been seen on ancient coins …
