An incomplete late medieval or post medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1200 - 1400 AD). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section. The fabric of the tile is hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is two tone, the outer a dark orange and the inner (core) a lighter orange. A green glaze has been applied to the upper surface and at least one edge. The tile depicts the 'Instruments of the Passion' including the flail, the pincers, a nail and the partial image of spear with the sponge. Comparable tiles have been identified in…

A fragment of an earthenware floor tile of post medieval date (c.1600 - 1900). The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. The upper surface is flat with a group of 5 circular perforations which are irregular in form. The underneath is divided by a cross shape creating four separate sections/zones, in which the group of circular perforations would have been placed. This design is typical for floor tiles used in a malting house, as the perforations allow the heat to rise from beneath the floor into the malting house. The fabric is relatively hard with occasional grit inc…

A complete small late medieval or post medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1200 - 1400 AD). The tile is square in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The fabric of the tile is hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is uniform throughout and is a mid-orange. The upper surface is incised with two parallel curving lines which would have most likely been part of a larger pattern when laid. There is no evidence of glaze on the upper surface, however, a patch of dark green glaze on the edge of the tile suggests that this would also have once be…

An incomplete late medieval or post medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1200 - 1400 AD). The fragment is broadly triangular in plan and cross-section. The fabric of the tile is hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is two tone, the outer a light yellow-orange and the inner (core) a mid-orange. Unfortunately the small size of the fragment means that the original pattern in not clear, however, it is possible that it is part of an interlocking C shaped scrolls style pattern. A yellow-green glaze has been applied to the upper surface. The tile…

An incomplete late medieval or post medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1200 - 1400 AD). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section. The fabric of the tile is hard earthenware with angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric colour is uniform throughout the tile and is mid orange. The tile appears to have been decorated with a series of foliate C shaped scrolls which may have had fleur-de-lis style terminals. A green glaze has been applied to the incised elements of the pattern, but no further glaze survives on the upper surface. The tile measures 66.…

An incomplete late medieval ceramic moulded floor tile (c.1300 - 1500 AD). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross section, although the bottom surface is irregular creating an irregular shaped cross-section in places. The fabric of the tile is relatively hard with angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. The fabric is also mica rich. The mid orange colour is fairly uniform throughout the tile, with a pinkish-orange on the base, most likely the result of the irregular thickness during firing. The upper surface has been decorated with interlocking C shaped …
