Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of handmade brick or similar ceramic building material. This is most likely to date to the Roman or Medieval period (50 - 410 AD or 1300 - 1500 AD). The fragment is relatively thick and irregular in plan. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. It is also has large amounts of mica and organic material within it. The colour is an oxidised red on the exterior, and grey/black on the interior, which suggests differential firing. The fragment is smooth and water washed. Not enough of the fragm…

Fragment of a post medieval (18th century) clay tobacco pipe bowl. The bowl is incomplete being broken along one edge. From the profile surviving it is most likely that this bowl fits within Atkinson's typology as Type 4A which has an elongated bowl, relatively small flat oval heel, and wide bore. This type is dated broadly to the period 1690-1720. The pipe is too incomplete to identify any finishing techniques. The small circular foot is unmarked. The pipe fragment measures 23.1mm by 19.1mm by 22.4mm, weight 6.98 grams. Atkinson, D. R. (1975). Tobacco Pipes of Broseley, Shropsh…

An iron cannon ball of post-medieval (probably English Civil War) date (1600-1700AD). The cannonball is sub-spherical with a diameter of 59.7mm mm. It weighs 6.8 kilograms (15lbs). It is made of iron which has been presumably cast - although the seams cannot be seen. The ball is of a mid-brown orange colour with areas of flaking and active corrosion. The cannon ball is in fairly good condition with no evidence of pitting. If the ball has been fired then it hasn't been damaged - suggesting it didn't hit anything substantial. The size of the ball suggests that it was possibly for a 5.5 …

A sherd from the base of a wheel thrown Samian ceramic vessel of Roman dating. The sherd is from the centre of the plate; the reverse has a small fragment of foot ring attached suggesting a foot ring diameter of 4cm. The vessel has an oxidised fabric with a red slip. This fabric type is consistent with an imported fine ware from Gaul possibly La Grauf. The sherd is 20.5mm high, 41.3mm long and 89.7mm wide. It weighs 51.5 grams.

A rim sherd of medieval unglazed earthenware pottery, most probably from either a cooking pot or jug. Unfortunately, the small size of the sherd makes it difficult to confirm the shape and style of the original vessel. The fabric is fairly uniform, it is mica rich with frequent angular and sub-angular black grit, sparse angular quartz inclusions. The fabric is reduced and is mid grey cream in colour. The sherd measures 31.6mm in length and 40mm in width. The vessel thickness is 7.6mm and the rim 8.9mm. The sherd weighs 19.7 grams.
