Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped shoe buckle frame. It is sub-oval in shape and flat, with a simple, narrowed, central, recessed bar. The frame has rounded ends and trefoil sides and has a flat base and a convex profile in cross-section. The strap bar has an incised line either side of the bar terminus on both sides of the frame. These lines make the frame appear raised between the lines, but this section is flush with the rest of the frame. On similar examples of this buckle type, the bar often has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with attachment stud to fix the buckle to …

Object type: CANDLE HOLDER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy candle holder, hexagonal in cross-section with a flaring cup and an opposed-angled base collar above a voided ring mount which would have attached to the base of the candle holder with its integral rivet. There are two moulded ribs around the hexagonal opening and one rib at the base. Between these raised ribs are circular holes above rectangular slots on opposing sides of the holder. These slots were presumably used to allow for a lever to push the candle upwards as it was used and shortened. There are transverse file marks all over the exterior and inter…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy uniface coin weight for a gold half noble with a raised boat on the upper face of the round flan. The boat has a brick-like structural pattern, which represents the wooden planks, within the banana-shaped sections of the hull. The hull terminates, both fore and aft, in lozenge-shaped decks with an internal annulet. There appears to be a letter that looks like an 'h' above the larger deck on the right side of the ship, which could refer to Henry IV, V or VI. There is a central mast with two sheets either side and a crow's nest at the apex of these five line…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast tin alloy or zinc alloy (tombac) composite two-piece discoidal button, circular in plan and plano-convex in profile, with a recessed area of damage on the upper face and two small circular holes on the back which would have held the attachment loop, now missing. This loop or shank would have been made out of copper alloy or iron wire which would have been embedded into the back of the button. There is green bronze disease in one hole and red iron oxide in the other so it is not clear which metal was used for the attachment loop. Bailey (2004) illustrates similar tombac buttons…
