Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post medieval to modern hand made copper alloy key. Its length indicates it was probably for a large chest or a door. It has a solid shank, with a bow formed by flattening the shank and perforating it. There is a low raised collar around the shank near the bit (teeth). This key is a bit of a conundrum as the majority of it could easily be ascribed to the nineteenth century or later. However the bit is more akin to those of a much earlier era (eg BERK-CC5682). In spite of the lack of comfortable parallels on the database, the key is most likely to date to between c1837 and c1939 AD. …

Post Medieval copper alloy pastry jigger, cutter, or crimper wheel. It has radiating grooves and ridges and a serrated zig-zig circumference. There is a central perforation (diameter 5mm) for an axle that would have been set into a handle, both now absent. Dates to between c1500 and c1900AD. The method and style of construction suggest a date earlier in this period. The diameter is 24mm, central perforation diameter 5mm, thickness 2.5mm, and the weight 6.14g. Post Medieval lead or lead alloy palm guard. It is ovate in plan with a broad shallowly domed cross section. The flat side has a central figure of eight depression. Dates to between c1700 and c1900 AD. Such objects would have been wrapped in cloth of leather with a hole above the depressions. They were then strapped to the hand to protect the palm when tightening cord or using awls and punches in an industry such as leatherworking or sail making. Palm guards of this design are thought to have been cast on occasion in mussel or oyster shells. Portable Antiquities Scheme record number I…

Post Medieval copper alloy strap mount. The strap fitting is a stylised acorn design. It is sub-oval in plan with the upper half being slightly narrowed. The surface of the mount is corroded and abraded. Dates to between c1500 and c1700 AD. Similar examples of strap fittings can be seen in Read (Read 2001: 29, fig. 22, refs: 331-334 ).
