Object type: TOGGLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy toggle of Post-Medieval date. The toggle is of the dumbbell type comprising two globular hemispherical terminals joined by a waisted central circular shaft.
The metal has a mid white patina and is worn. The toggle is 20.3mm long, 12.2mm in diameter at the terminals, 7.1mm in diameter at the shaft and weighs 15.1g.
Numerous stylistically similar toggles of 'dumbell' type made from copper alloy exist which date to the Iron Age and Roman period. However, the material and patina of this object suggests it to be of later date, probably Post Medieval.
