An incomplete fragment from a massive clay pipe of post medieval date. The fragment was passed to Dr David Higgins of the National Clay Pipe Archive. Dr Higgins produced the report below for inclusion within 2015: 'Report of the Portable Antiquities Scheme 2014', Post-Medieval Archaeology, 49/2, 338 and 341-2 (334-346). A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl probably dating to the Medieval period, circa AD1200-1450. The object is sub-circular in plan with a domed upper face and a flat rear face. Slightly off-centre is a vertical, sub circular perforation with an approximate diameter of 8.7mm. No discernible decoration is now present. The slightly uneven surface to the upper face suggests that the spindle whorl may originally have had a moulded decoration. A complete cast lead alloy weight probably dating to the Post Medieval period, circa AD1500-1800. The weight is broadly conical in profile with a sub-circular base and sides which taper to a rounded point. The base of the weight shallows slightly towards the central vertical perforation. An incomplete struck / knapped flint tanged arrowhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 2500BC to c. 1500 BC. The arrowhead is sub-triangular in plan with one surviving barb and a central tang. The second tang is missing due to modern damage. The arrowhead is broadly lentoid in cross section. The flint is an uneven grey / blue colour with flecks of light grey patina.
