Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete Roman (AD 43-80) copper alloy Colchester-derivative with two pierced lugs brooch, missing its spring mechanism and pin. It measures 46.07mm in length and weighs 4.70g.
The wings are D-shaped in cross-section (being flat to the reverse) and span 15.31mm. One wing is shorter than the other (c.7mm to 5mm) although both have a transverse groove close to the end of the wing, suggesting the shorter hasn't suffered any damage to its length. The shorter wing is also slightly horizontally offset to the other. To the reverse is a double-pierced lug, the top of which extends above…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Medieval (1250-1400) copper alloy seal matrix with a circular die and hexagonally-faceted handle, terminating in a pierced quatrefoil above a quadruple-ridged moulded collar. The object stands 25.46mm in height and weighs 12.39g. The die measures 21.53mm in diameter.
The die bears a legend, perhaps *S'An(D)R[...]W[....]SLE , around a squirrel bending forwards, its long bushy tail curling behind its body to the top of its head, and two long limbs forward, the fore-arm reaching towards an open mouth having just deposited a nut there.

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published
A flint handaxe of the Lower Palaeolithic (500,000-180,000 BC).
