An incomplete Roman (AD 43-80) copper alloy Colchester-derivative with two pierced lugs brooch, missing its spring mechanism and pin. It measures 46.07mm in length and weighs 4.70g. The wings are D-shaped in cross-section (being flat to the reverse) and span 15.31mm. One wing is shorter than the other (c.7mm to 5mm) although both have a transverse groove close to the end of the wing, suggesting the shorter hasn't suffered any damage to its length. The shorter wing is also slightly horizontally offset to the other. To the reverse is a double-pierced lug, the top of which extends above…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman plate brooch dating to the second century AD. The remains of the brooch consist of a trefoil-shaped plate with three equal recessed ring-and-dot cells with a central pellet on the outer surface. The recessed rings bear traces of blue enamel inlay around the outer circumference and it is possible that the cells were completely filled with blue enamel or further filled with another colour, now missing, in the inner portion of the cell. The combination of the three raised circles creates a small triangle-shaped voide in the centre of the plate. The r…
