An incomplete upper half from a volcanic lava stone quern of Post-Medieval date. Approximately 45% of the quern survives, preserving part of the incomplete central circular(?) aperture. The grinding surface has incised radial grooves with some uneven wear. To one side, at the central aperture, is a sub-rectangular depression with flaring sub-circular outer edge that may have enabled attachment of the quern to a central iron spindle. Vertical grooves are visible on parts of the edges, but these are mostly worn or missing due to use- or post-depositional wear. The non-grinding surface i…

Iron Age and Roman Coin Hoard (35) Circumstances of discovery Seven Iron Age gold coins and 25 Roman silver coins were discovered on the 9th January 2014 during a metal detecting rally. The discovery of a number of coins by one of the participants alerted the rally organisers to the possibility that there was a dispersed hoard in the ground. They cordoned off the area but allowed the finder to continue detecting. The finder recovered 31 coins within an area measuring 30 metres in diameter. The Iron Age and the Roman coins were apparently mixed together in a single scatter across th…

A corroded and abraded cast copper-alloy foot from a later medieval to early post-medieval cooking vessel. The object is splayed at the base in a simple, out-turned, pad-like foot of trapezoidal cross-section, slightly irregular now. The front of the foot is decorated with a prominently moulded central rib: any further elaboration has been obscured by old damage. The break is irregular. The flat back and base make an obtuse angle of about 110 degrees. As noted, the object has become corroded post-deposition, and is largely a variable mid/dark-green colour. This form of foot is compara…

Description: Part of shaft and spatulate end from a stylus, made from partly gilded silver. The shaft is variable in cross-section; it is broken just below a rounded collar flanked by pairs of transverse ridges, all of which run right round the circumference. Below this the cross-section is a regular octagon; above it, the cross-section is more nearly rectangular, although the arrises have very narrow facets. The front of the stylus above the bead is decorated with a pair of border grooves, which converge as the shaft tapers, and then meet in a point just above the collar. Further …
