Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval lead cloth seal missing the perforated disc and the connecting strip, dating to the period c. AD1500 - 1800. The surviving disc is broadly circular in plan and has a cental plug on one side on which the letter G is legible. This would have been seperated from another letter, (now unreadable) by a central ridge which bifurcates in two near the bottom of the plug. There is no design visible on the other side of the seal, although both sides retain the imprint of cloth.
The seal measures 19.55mm in diameter and is 3.17mm thick. It weighs 3.87g.

The front disc has a raised design of a basically rendered swan standing left with the inscription [...]ALLENC[...] written in Roman capitals around the left edge and towards the base. On the reverse of this disc are a number of depressions. No obvious impression of cloth survives. A perforation is present adjacent to the projection towards the circumference.
