Incomplete forged iron knife, with a broken blade at one end, and tapering towards the tang at the other end which is bent at a 45 degree angle. The upper edge and the blade edge have parallel sides in plan, from the break until the blade starts to taper towards the tang, at an oblique angle. One face of the knife is forged and tapered in three stages, as it narrows to the cutting edge, in section. The opposite face is flat, suggesting that this blade was used to cut sideways, perhaps as part of a pair of shears, or used like a 'currier' knife which was used for cutting and paring lea…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a medieval copper alloy probable buckle plate, part of the fold, with both sides and the inside edge of the front part, and almost all of the rear part missing. Parts of two apertures suggest that the object may have been similar to an example from Oxborough, Norfolk (HER 56912, NMS-8003A2). There is, however, no pin slot, which suggests that there may have been more than three apertures. Between the surviving two there are three engraved grooves. Extant dimensions 18 x 18mm. c.1150 - c.1225.

A rim fragment of a medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy vessel, now of irregular quadrilateral form. The fragment appears to be the rim of a serving vessel, now with shallow curvature. The rim is thickened externally, with an external groove at the base of the thickened area. Below there is an external ridge or cord; this is echoed by a double incised line internally. The breaks are old but fairly straight, perhaps suggesting a relatively brittle alloy used. The object has a grey-green patina. Crudely made cast copper-alloy vessels were widely used from c.AD 1200-1700 fo…
