Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of a Medieval copper-alloy mount.
The surviving piece takes the form of a flat-sectioned scallop shell with broken arm projecting from the flat end. A series of chevron-shaped grooves has been used to create the surface design. Traces of gilding also survive on this upper surface, with remnants of a possible solder material on the underside.
Length: 12.6mm; width: 13.4mm; thickness: 1.5mm; weight: 0.84g.
This probably represents the terminal of a bar mount. The use of solder and lack of a rivet hole suggest it probably adorned a metal box or casket. A date of 12th to 14t…

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy harness link, dating from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods.
The piece comprises a semicircular-sectioned bar with moulded block at one end and part of a frame at the other. The block is cuboidal, has a raised circle on its upper surface, and a rounded, right-angled knop projecting from each of its two flat outer faces. Also projecting from this block is the remnant of a second bar, the alignment being the same as that of the complete one. Less than half remains of what appears to have been a sub-oval frame. A rounded knop extends downwards from the …

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of a copper-alloy bracelet or armlet, probably dating from the Late Roman period.
The piece represents one terminal end from a penannular type bracelet or armlet. The hoop is of circular section, its diameter gradually increasing towards the terminal, which comprises a short cylinder with transversely grooved circumference. The terminal and hoop are separated from each other by a deeply incised groove. A series of lighter, parallel grooves form a panel on the inner side of this deep groove, their lengths gradually decreasing towards the end of the panel, where they are contain…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy La Tene 1Bc type brooch, dating from the Early to Middle Iron Age.
The brooch has been cast in one piece and is incomplete, with all of the spring and pin mechanism having been lost. The arched bow is of flat section and is pointed-oval in plan. The decoration consists of a low relief moulding, slightly narrower than the raised area of the bow, but of equal shape. A shallow groove extends longitudinally, down the centre of the bow. The foot extends straight downwards from the base of the bow and has a rolled side with adjacent groove.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Late Iron Age to Early Roman copper-alloy Nauheim-derivative brooch.
The brooch has been cast in one piece and has a flat-sectioned bow, the top of which extends into the three remaining spring coils and internal chord. The pin is missing. The upper surface of the bow bears a number of lightly incised, longitudinal grooves which are probably the result of filing, rather than being decorative. The straight-sided bow gradually tapers towards the bottom, extending into a pointed foot, with the remains of a catchplate on the underside.
Length: 36.7mm; width (head): 8.7mm; weight: 1.47g.

Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of a Middle to Late Bronze Age socketed axehead.
The surviving piece represents the lower part of the axehead and is roughly trapezoidal in plan, its thickness tapering towards the convex cutting edge. The remains of the central concavity are visible on the jagged upper edge, whose patination suggests that the damage occurred in antiquity. Both of the two narrower faces of the axehead display a longitudinal casting seam.
Length: 33.8mm; width: 37.8mm; thickness: 10.9mm; weight: 52.02g.
