Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and squashed but complete copper alloy thimble dating to the early post-medieval period. The thimble has a peaked dome at the top and is decorated on both the top and the sides with hand-punched rectangular pits. Below the final line of pits on the sides of the thimble is a cojoined crescentic type decoration. There may also be a maker's mark but this could be hidden by an area of corrosion. This style of thimble was made in Nuremberg where the Guild of Thimblemakers required all thimbles to be marked, however not all were. The thimble dates from c. 1550-1620 AD.

A sherd of poorly fired ceramic of uncertain prehistoric date. The sherd has a buff outer side while the rest is a mid brownish grey colour with occasional rounded stone inlcusions. The sherd is likely to be from a vessel however it may also be fired clay, or just a poorly fired vessel. It is suggested that this sherd is Bronze Age or early Iron Age in date. Several pieces of prehistoric pottery spanning the late Bronze Age to late Iron Age, of which these are some, were recovered from a small area around Brightwell Barrow in the 1920s.

A collection of eight abraded body sherds from ceramic vessels of probable later prehistoric date. The fabrics are mostly tempered with fine or small crushed flint and fired to have either a light or dark grey core. Most of the sherds have an orangey or buff outer with dark inner wall; mica specks can be seen in most sherds. There appears to be several vessels represented but all sherds are heavily abraded. The fabric and appearance of the sherds suggest a later prehistoric date, c. 400 BC - AD 43. Several pieces of prehistoric pottery spanning the late Bronze Age to late Iron Age, of…
