A lead-alloy weight of probable medieval to post-Medieval date. The weight has been constructed from a sheet of metal which has been rolled lengthways, creating a cylinder which has then been flattened. The surface has a matt greyish /white patina. Length 33.90 mm. Diameter 15.56 mm. Aperture 7.02 mm x 4.55 mm. Weight 28 grams. It would seem feasable to use these type of weights for the weighing down of nets around the outer edge for the trapping of small game or fish. The weight would be rolled around the cord and would be less likely to create tangling of the net.

A cast lead alloy, shield-shaped weight dating from the Medieval period, AD 1350 - 1500. It has a raised central field, also shield-shaped, that is undecorated. The weight has a light grey patina. It is 32.1mm long, 29.8mm wide and 10.3mm thick. It weighs 52gm and was probably intended to be a 2oz weight, though it is a little light. Similar weights, usually decorated, are illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, page 38.

Lead and glass Weight. Cast lead plano-convex domed weight with three transparent colourless glass beads embedded in its upper surface. Weights with embedded objects are an Early Medieval form. The mass of this example is equivalent to one slightly overweight uncia or Roman ounce (of 27.3gms), and the Middle Saxon use of Roman weights and measures after the Conversion would seem to provide the most appropriate context for its use. The distinction of plano-convex counters with embedded objects has also encouraged their identification as game pieces for hnafetafl, in which a king was di…
