Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A lead alloy Medieval button of poor quality dating from AD 1200 - 1500. The front is a very shallowly angled cone and is decorated with a large central pellet with sixteen raised lines radiating from it, each terminating in a small pellet. There is a casting rib on the reverse, and projecting from the centre, an integral shank. This may be a mis-cast loop, or it may be a truncated shaft which would have terminated in an attachment loop. The button is similar to Figure 6.1 on page 17 of Buttons and Fasteners by Gordon Bailey.
