Object type: INGOT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy ingot. Cast and hammered round-ended and slightly tapered billet of metal, now tarnished black overall. The form is typical of ingots ascribed to the Viking and Anglo-Scandinavian periods, particularly during the floruit of a bullion economy c.865-925. The proximity of a Viking army camp of the early 11th century extends the date range to be considered in this case. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1050. The object was originally considered as possibly silver, whereas subsequent examination at the British Museum identifies it as a brass. Due to its suspected material a…

Object type: CURSE TABLET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead possible curse tablet. A rectangle cut from cast lead sheet of thickness 1.7mm, neatly and tightly rolled thrice, leaving a central aperture. The distinction between a curse tablet and a fishing net sinker of Early Medieval form resides in the careful cutting and rolling of the former, which contrasts with the casual rolling or clenching of a weight of similar construction. Both classes of objects may come from watery or riparian contexts, though for different reasons - Prehistoric and Romano-British cults had a particular respect for watery locations. Suggested date: Roman, 43-4…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead seal matrix. A rhomboid plate cut from cast lead sheet of thickness 2.5mm, with a knop at one end which is perforated as a means of suspension. An incised central motif within a rhomboid panel comprises a sun or star with streaming (i.e. wavy) rays above a crescent moon, with irregularly spaced dots probably representing stars at either end of the panel. An incised legend reads: X SIG ROGERI FIL [--]CON DE PRI[--] [Seal of Roger son ..of ....?pray?], with more certainty at the beginning than the end of the legend. Patinated overall, and folded into a loose S shape. The technique …

Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead probable metalworking debris. A roughly semi-circular lump of lead with numerous small dints in either side, probably from light hammering. The mass might suggest this to be a weight representing four Scandinavian units (of 4.07gms), as used for silver bullion transactions, but the shoddy appearance argues against thisr. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast fragment with a flat back. The reddish tint below an abraded surface patina is a feature of many objects of Anglo-Scandinavian date. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly comments that, rather than being a distressed artefact fragment, this may be a fragment of casting spillage.Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1800.

Pottery. Sherd of externally oxidised and internally reduced hard fired fabric. The fabric is well made but the form poorly modelled. This reporter initially considered the sherd to be from the thumbed attachment of a strap handle to a large vessel; however, Wallace Collyer of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group identifies this as a base sherd from a large vessel with a foot ring. Relict patches of transparent splashed glaze appear on the outer surface. These characteristics offer contradictory dates: the form and poor modelling suggests an early date, c.1150-1300, while the…

Copper alloy gilt with gem stone seal matrix, either from a fob or a desk seal. A rectangular yellow transparent stone with bevelled edges and facetted back is clenched by a sheet metal setting. The stone bears an heraldic crest of a squirrel holding a nut and, on the matrix, facing right above the empanelled letters D D. Behind this, a band resembling that of a finger ring is apparently brazed to the setting, though it could not have been comfortably worn. At positions equivalent to the shoulders of a ring, a series of incised grooves decorates an expanded end to the band. Similar fe…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Iron probable chisel blade fragment. A sub-rectangular bar, very slightly splayed as it tapers towards a cutting edge, which is damaged, probably by wear in antiquity. In profile of an elongated V form. The form of hand tools of wrought iron changed little through the historical period, though in this case the survival of enough metal to lend some weight to the object might hint at a later period in the broad date range which is all that can be offered. Suggested date: unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800.
Length: 75.5mm, Width (at working edge of blade): 26mm, Width (at…

Object type: CAME
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead possible window came fragment. Cast H section strip fragment, probably part-melted and heavily patinated overall. The gutters to retain the edges of glass panes (lost) suggest a thickness of 1.5-2mm for the glass, which suggests a later date, though the use of massy cast cames is more typical of the medieval period. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700.
