Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead-alloy steelyard weight with iron suspension loop, probably dating from the Roman period. The solid-cast body is of circular section, and is ovoid. The apex loop, made of iron, is almost entirely missing. Its mass is 305g, which is a little less than a Roman pound (libra) at 328.9g. Allowing for the missing iron loop and surface damage, this could be a weight for 1 Roman pound. The surface of the weight is covered with dents and scratches, but most are patinated to a grey/cream colour. Compare BH-3FAAC1.
