An incomplete sheet metal plate - most probably a book fitting or possibly a buckle plate of later medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The plate is broadly rectangular in plan and profile (originally being flat - now curled and distorted). The plate was original an irregular pentagon in shape with a pointed terminal. That angled edge is pierced with small circular rivet holes. The internal surface has ring and dot decoration around each rivet hole. The reverse surface is plain and undecorated. Lead musket ball. Cast ball with two intersecting slashes on its surface, and a dimple opposite, possibly from the end of the ram rod. Patinated overall. The cutting of the shot may be a deliberate attempt to improve its lethality, which might hint at military usage. The mass, at over an ounce, is also apt for a muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 17.6mm, Weight: 30.77gms.

A Roman copper-alloy mount, probably from the rim of a metal vessel. The solid-cast mount takes the form of a seated or swimming bird resembling a stylised duck. The body is drop-shaped when viewed from above, and is of triangular section, with a central ridge extending longitudinally down the upper surface. The neck extends upwards from the wider end of the body, forming an angle of nearly 90 degrees. Like the body, the neck also has an angular appearance; it tapers to a rounded head. The beak extends horizontally forward from the face, which has no clear features. An integral, ci…

A sherd from the foot of a midlands purpleware vessel, probably a storage jar of post medieval date (1600 - 1720). This sherd is relatively fresh with crisp broken edges. The fabric of the sherd is a very hard earthenware (almost viscous stoneware) with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. There is also a high proportion of mica and sand like grains present in the fabric. The fabric colour is mid purple brown and the inner and outer surfaces of the sherd is a mottled purple grey. The base has remnants of black coloured glaze adhering to the lower edge …
