Post-medieval tin-coated copper alloy buckle frame with the remains of an iron plate and/or pin on the deeply recessed central bar. The form of the frame is abnormal. Apart from a large rounded projection from the straight edge it might be described as either shield-shaped with that edge downwards or resembling the upper part of a lancet window when viewed the other way around. A small notch in the centre of the straight edge indicates it was the outside edge. Length 44mm. Width 23.5mm. No parallel noted, but such recessed bars can be found on harness buckles. This example, however, …

Fragment from a sheet metal plate - most probably a buckle plate of later medieval date (1200-1500 AD). The plate is irregular in plan and profile (originally being flat - now curled and distorted). No original edges survive, although one potential rivet hole is present along one edge. The upper surface is decorated with two parallel incised lines that probably form a border to the entire plate. The reverse surface is plain and undecorated. The artefact is a mid green colour with a well formed surface patina. The artefact measures 26.0mm length, is 25.8mm wide and 1.0mm thick; it…

Cast copper alloy double looped buckle of probable post-medieval date (1620-1680). The buckle frame is complete and is broadly rectangular in plan with a central bar. From the short edge of the frame two triangular shaped wedges extend. The pin is complete and formed from a single sub-rectangular tapering length of copper alloy sheet which is attached to the central bar by the end being folded to form an irregular 'wrap around' loop. There is no evidence for a recessed pin rest on the frame. At the centre of the buckle, above the axis bar are two small abraded knops. The reverse of th…
