Post-medieval tin-coated copper alloy buckle frame with the remains of an iron plate and/or pin on the deeply recessed central bar. The form of the frame is abnormal. Apart from a large rounded projection from the straight edge it might be described as either shield-shaped with that edge downwards or resembling the upper part of a lancet window when viewed the other way around. A small notch in the centre of the straight edge indicates it was the outside edge. Length 44mm. Width 23.5mm. No parallel noted, but such recessed bars can be found on harness buckles. Distorted lead alloy button cover, the reverse crimped over the remains of leather. The main part within a raised border depicts, in repoussé, an ornate shield bearing the letter R, beneath a small equal-armed cross and between the letter C on the left and another letter partly obscured by the squashed border but almost certainly an R on the right.
