Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy ampulla. Hollow cast ampulla or bag shaped vessel, with the stubs of torn handles where rounded vessel meets the splayed neck. The rounded body bears raised rays on both sides, in imitation of the surface of the cockle shell associated with the cult of St James of Compostella. This imitation is more direct than is often the case, is unaccompanied by other visible decoration or lettering, and these features may hint at a relatively early date in the series of similar badges. The aperture at the top is now open. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350. Hei…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy with gilding vessel base. Cast - probably hollow cast given the form - flat base of a small vial or canister with a diameter greater than that of its base; the sides become very thin towards the limit of their surviving extent. The outer surface of the object is gilded, most extensively on its base, with tiny spots of gilding retained on the sides. Corroded and heavily patinated clear of gilding. The combination of lead and gold is unusual. Suggested date: possibly Medieval, 1200-1500. Diameter: 22.4mm, Height: 7.4mm, Thickness (centre of base): 2.4mm, Weight: 6.52gms.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete conical lead weight (probably) of unknown date. It has a central hole running from top to bottom with a recessed ring around the hole on the base, probably as a result of the manufacturing process. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses, including for measuring, weighing down nets, as curtain pulls and window weights etc). They are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead alloy unidentified object. The object is sub-circular and roughly rectangular in cross-section. The perforation is roughly central but unusually is rectangular in plan, not circular like one would find on a weight or spindle whorl. This raises the possibility that its use is something other than a weight. Rectangular apertures are often used for the tang of a blade, and it is possible that this is part of a knife or sword, however without comparison this is only speculative; no other examples of a lead weight with rectangular hole have been found in a preliminary searc…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead alloy circular flat weight, possibly a spinde whorl or loom weight, of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - AD 1650). The weight is sub-circular and roughly rectangular in cross-section. The perforation is off-centre. There are no markings or decoration on this object and out of context these types of finds are hard to date as they remained in use for a long period of time. Many lead alloy spindle whorls similar to this object are normally attributed to the Medieval period (c. AD 1100 to AD 1450). There is a direct relationship between the weight of the whorl and the t…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn but complete lead alloy token or tally, probably dating to the late medieval or early post-medieval period. The token is bifaced, bearing an unclear design on the obverse, possibly of a bird's head with other designs surrounding it, while an externally spoked wheel with dots within and without decorates the reverse. The token is good quality and was made in a mould. The alloy is more petwer-like than most tokens of the post-medieval period, and this along with the quality and design suggests that it may be earlier, possibly 15th or 16th century.

Object type: POWDER MEASURE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Post Medieval lead alloy powder flask cap or measure, probably dating to the 17th century. The object is cup-like in appearance with an open end. No loops remain at the base which would have fastened to the bandolier (belt) with a cord. The overall shape of this cap is now flattened causing a split down one side. The object is of a mottled white and dark grey colouration. It measures 17.9 mm high, with 1.2 mm wall thickness and it weighs 10.14 grams. The flask itself would have contained enough explosive for a complete charge for the weapon. A series of these holders would have b…

An incomplete lead weight of uncertain date. It is conical in profile with a circular base. The weight tapers from the base to a sub-rectangular apex where one point is slightly higher than the other. This is most likely the remnants of a suspension loop or perforation. The loop is missing due to either an old break or due to post-depositional processes. There is a flat, smooth recess that starts from the apex and stops abruptly about halfway down the weight. The weight is undecorated and it is white-greyish in colour. The weight is 33.49mm tall, 20.36mm wide, 7.81mm thick and weig…
