Broad period: ROMAN
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Roman copper-alloy mount of trompetenmuster type. The openwork mount comprises three ajoining symbols, each of which is of similar size and form, being roughly 'C-shaped' and flaring towards a trumpet-like terminal. The two lower symbols are set back-to-back, their straight bottom sides giving the mount a forked appearance; the third symbol surmounts the lower two, its trumpet end at the bottom. The flat reverse has three integrally cast, circular-sectioned rivets. One of these rivets is located at the top of the mount and the other two are behind the left and right forks respect…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-Medieval copper-alloy furniture fitting. The piece is roughly 'L-shaped' and probably represents a corner fitting. The outward-facing figure has stylised, angular features and a projecting beard and headwear. The body is elongated and heavily stylised, its straight sides converging towards the bottom, where it extends into a 'Z-shaped' leg with hoof. A screw thread projects downwards from the base of the hoof and a horizontal bar…

A pair of rivet holes is located a short distance down from the scalloped top side of the attachment, with opposing holes in the lower plate. An incised, pelta-shaped panel of decoration is lo…

An incomplete copper-alloy frame from a Medieval single-loop buckle. The frame takes the form of a three dimensional representation of a lion, who stands to the left and faces outwards (i.e. head turned 90 degrees to his left). The animal has a slender body and upward-curving tail. The legs, which form the top and bottom sides of the frame, have a slight outward bow; this curvature continues into the concave underside of the body, creating a 'D-shaped' gap. Only a short length of the axis bar survives; originally, it would have extended between the forepaws and the hind paws. Multi…
