A copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount, dating from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. The piece is of flat-section and sub-pentagonal in plan, having an apex loop and three projecting lobes on either side. The upper surface bears an incised design, picked out in niello and broadly symmetrical. The central element of this design is a saltire, each of the two upper ends of which terminates in a downward-facing zoomorphic head. These heads extend along the outer sides of the mount, from the mid point downwards, with the upper projecting lobe forming the brow and the lower representi…

A copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the Late Early-Medieval period. Beneath the strap-end's split attachment end, the two sides bow outwards, reaching a maximum width halfway down, after which they converge towards the basal terminal. The lower two thirds of the strap-end are solid; in the upper third it bifurcates, creating a central gap flanked above and below by two plates of equal form. A pair of rivet holes is located a short distance down from the scalloped top side of the attachment, with opposing holes in the lower plate. An incised, pelta-shaped panel of decoration is lo…

A cast copper alloy sword pommel of early medieval date, probably Viking era. The pommel consists of 5 lobes with the central lobe being the largest. The three central lobes are hollow. The lobes on either side of the centre diminish in size. The recesses at each end indicate that this was a two-part pommel and there appears to be encrustation between lobes 1 and 2 perhaps from binding material that held together the two parts. The base is flat. It is interesting to note that the three central lobes are much more separated than most examples and individually hollow rather than a singl…

A copper-alloy stirrup terminal, dating from the Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. The piece is zoomorphic, taking the form of a three-dimensional representation of the head and neck of a beast. The terminal is roughly semi-cylindrical, with the forward-facing head at the distal end. The animal has a moulded brow ridge, on either side of which is a ring-shaped eye with central pellet. A pair of rounded ears is located between the back of the brow ridge and the top end of the mount, the latter of which is defined by a rim. At the front of the face, the snout angles upwards before …

An incomplete early medieval copper alloy cruciform brooch, dating to AD 450-600. The brooch consists of a square head-plate with irregularly shaped wings on either side. Ontop of the head is a domed knop with moulded collar. The brooch has an arched bow with faceted corners, slightly concave on the back. The brooch is broken below the arched bow. On comparison with other examples the bow would have extened much further, ending in a decorative foot. On the reverse of the head-plate is evidence of an iron spring pin, only reddish-brown corrosion product remains. There is a linear decor…

Incomplete Late Saxon lead tongue-shaped strap end, broken across the start of the split end.
