Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked lithic implement. The tool is sub-rectangular in plan with a point and notch at the distal edge. There is parallel flaking on the dorsal face. There are ripple marks on the ventral face where the piece came away from the core. On this side there are a few small flaking scars at the edges from retouch. The right edge towards the distal end is also notched. There is short, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch on the distal edge to produce a point. There is further similar retouch along both the right and left edges. The proximal end is flat and rough with no clear bulb of purcussion vis…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent

A heavily rolled ovate bifacial handaxe dating from the Palaeolithic period. The axe is sub-cordate in plan with a relatively wide flat butt. The distal end has been broken in antiquity, as it has the same patination as the rest of the surface, but has been reshaped. The profile of the axehead narrows towards the distal end and again towards the butt. It has been worked on both the dorsal and ventral faces. The dorsal face has been struck in various directions resulting in both large and small forming scars. The ventral face does not have the same large number of forming scars and ins…

Object type: SERRATED IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An opaque black flint possible serrated implement. There are two possible flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect. There is a bulb of purcussion on the ventral side at one end. The flake has a sub-triangular cross-section. The distal edge is rounded. There is possible retouch along the whole of the left edge and towards the distal end of the right edge, however this could have been caused by running the flint along the sides of a blade to produce a serrated edge. These generally date to the early Neolithic period, however the prominent bulb of percussion on this object suggests it co…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete large pale grey polished flint axehead. The axehead is almost complete at has an all-over polish with only a few original flake scars visible at the edges. The axehead has broken at the butt end, a common break where the axe was hafted to the handle. The broken area has the same patination as the rest of the object further suggesting the break happened in antiquity. The profile of the axehead narrows towards the distal edge. The butt end does not appear to be narrowed, however the breakage make this difficult to confirm. The plan of the dorsal and vental faces is wider at…
