An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch dating from the mid 1st to mid 2nd centuries, circa AD50-150. Classified as an Initial T-Shaped Brooch. The head of the brooch, including one complete and one damaged wing, survives as well as most of the bow. The spring, pin and foot of the brooch are missing due to old breaks. Circumstances of discovery
These addenda were found whilst metal-detecting on a number of occasions between 1997 - 2013. The original find was a Severan denarius hoard (tpq AD 207) consisting of 165 coins (and eleven pottery sherds from a greyware globular jar). This was published by J. Williams and V. An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting or strap slide loop, probably dating to the early Roman period (c. AD 43-200). The strap slide has a decorative head of an ornate flower or shell with extending lobe. The decoration is split over two levels and appears incomplete. The rounded lobe has a hollowed centre and it may have once contained enamel or coloured paste. On the reverse is a rectangular loop. Copper alloy plate rrooch, Mackreth type British PL 3.b1. A flat plate with pronounced border to a large single cell, representing a hound or hare leaping left. Long ears are represented by an oval lug with incised dividing line, and the eye by a large (diameter 2.4mm) sunken cell. Traces of [now] red colorant are retained towards the rump of the animal.
