Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast copper alloy unidentified object, probably dating to the Early Medieval period and of Anglo-Saxon attribution, c. 11th century AD. The fragment consists of an irregularly shaped plate, which is now twisted from damage, but seems to have originally been flat. The outer surface is decorated with a raised zoomorphic design and traces of chalky white substance in some of the recessed areas could suggest inlaid material. The reverse surface is plan and undecorated. The fragment measures 40 mm long, 19.4 mm maximum width, 3.2 mm thick and weighs 9.3 grams.

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy Post Medieval token of Elizabeth I, probably dating to c. AD 1574. The obverse depicts a double-eagle with no legend; the reverse depicts a crowned rose with E R at side with a legend reading: GOD SAVE THE QVEEN. Cf. North 1991 Vol II, p. 140, no. 2062.
According to North (1991, Vol II, p. 140), it is likely that rather than being used as tokens, these objects were probably used as political medalets or counters, with earlier versions relating to Mary. However, this type is listed as relating to Elizabeth I.

Object type: TOY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment from a lead-alloy toy 'horn book' of post-medieval date, representing around 25% of the original object. It is from the bottom right hand corner of a rectangular plaque, and reads OP in a line, above TV in a line, above YZ in a line, with decoration below, all in low relief. The omission of the letter U is not unusual (Lewis 2012, 99). The decoration at the base is indistinct but may consist of a central cross flanked immediately by a diagonal line, then by four or five upright strokes: possibly representing a numeral (see Lewis 2012, 100). The letters are within a border c…

The form of the artefact is that of an 'elaborate quatrefoil' (Ward Perkins' (1940, 118) Type V), that is, with lozengiform protrusions between the semicircles. Central on one of the semicircles would have been a suspension loop, but this upper semicircle has been bent back slightly and the once integral loop lost. The upper surface of the pendant is decorated with a design in cameo within enamel decayed to a white colour. The device is a crowned letter R possibly with a palm behind. Florid decoration emerges fro…

A wrought post-medieval copper-alloy joinery nail, bent and broken probably from extraction. The nail has a decorative square head that measures 11.6 by 11.3mm. There is a deep indent, probably a casting flaw on the reverse. It measures 18.8 mm in diameter, 1.9mm thick and weighs 3.71 grams.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or…
