Gold mourning ring, the hoop decorated with cross-hatching and an engraved skull, and an inscription on the inside of the hoop: 'In remembrance of my dear neece' and below in a line: 'E M ob. 18 Ap. 77 ag. 25' which are the initials and the date of death (obit = died) and the age of the deceased. Beyond the end of the inscription is the maker's mark: the initials 'EB'. The abbreviated date indicates that the date is 1677 as the omission of the first two digits was not done in the second half of the 18th century. The landowner believes that the initials E M could be those of a…

Object type: SHOE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete sheet copper alloy miniature shoe, missing part of the sole, near the toe, and the heel, with two rectangular attachments for staples or studs to attach the shoe to the foot of a doll, probably made of wood. But the shoe is quite large for a doll's shoe and these are not normally made of metal, so it is more likely that this shoe would have held a pin cushion with the staples, within the aperture of the shoe. The recorder has seen similar brass examples of pin cushion holders on-line in the form of a Victorian shoe with a pointed toe and heel, and a decorative plate above t…

Gilt copper alloy 'dandy' button, circular in plan and flat in profile, but missing its attachment loop on the back. The button face has been incised and then gilded with a central cross of nine pellets within a four-petalled flower. From each arched angle, between the petals, emanates an arm of a four-armed cross of bifid, V-shaped leaf motifs. The gilding that remains in the fields between the arms of the cross retains the chequered pattern of incised rows of pellets on a gird, creating a patchwork effect, perhaps trying to emulate woven textiles. Bailey (2004) illustrates a simi…
