Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval Georgian or modern silver buckle frame and tongue fragment. The countersunk decoration inside the border of the external face is a continuous zig zag motif. Remnants of a rather crude attachment indicate that the buckle may have been repaired at a later date & adapted into a brooch while retaining the original tongue. The rather worn hallmarks indicate it is Chester 1738 or 1913. Makers mark C.H. The absence of a duty mark doesn't aid with dating. Whichever date it was, it appears to be a copy of a form of late seventeenth to early eighteenth century shoe buckle. The …

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A silver handmade pin, probably a hairpin, of either Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. The pin head is cuboid and the shaft of the pin is quite thick, tapering finally to a sharp end. The pin is bent and the surface has sustained minor damage, probably post-depositional in nature. It is missing its pin-end. The pin measures 42.2 mm long (with bend), approximately 60 mm long (original length without bend), 5.5 mm diameter at pin-head, 3.9 to 1.7 mm diameter pin shaft; the pin weighs 5.7 grams. The thickness of the shaft might argue for a Roman date rather than Anglo-Saxon.
