A fragment from a cast copper-alloy right-angled drop handle, probably from a vessel of later medieval date (AD 1300-1500). The horizontal and vertical shafts are octagonal in cross-section and have a maximum diameter of 9mm. There are many file marks which are probably associated with finishing of the artefact. It has an angled protruding acorn knop at the corner where the shafts connect. The overall condition is good with an even green patina. A similar handle has been found in archaeological excavations at Victoria Street (Baynard Castle Dock) in London. That example was tentati…

A claw at the rear secures the interior chord which is an extension of the spring. The bow flares outwards and downwards and then tapers inwards to a collar. Below the collar curves forwards slightly and is circular in cross-section. The terminal at the foot is missing. The catch-plate is missi…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval cast copper-alloy asymmetrical double-looped buckle, complete with pin and chape. The buckle frame has one rectangular and one D-shaped loop. A simple sheet copper-alloy pin is retained at the pin bar by the chape. The frame features transverse notches at the centre of the outer edges of both loops that would have acted as pin rests. The chape is formed of a single piece of metal folded over on itself, the upper fold narrowed and curved round to form a hooked terminal. The frame is curved in profile, perhaps as a result of wear. This may be a spur buckle, its chap…

A Roman copper alloy hinged T shaped brooch dating to c.AD 50-150. The wings each have two deeply incised transverse grooves and are circular in cross-section. There is a slot in the centre to hold the pin, which does not survive. The bow starts from the top rather than the front of the head, arching above it in the distinctive 'dolphin' form. It then curves through 180 degrees in a shallow but continuous curve to the foot. It tapers in width evenly from the top to the pointed foot. The bow is oval in section at the top, becoming circular in section about half of the way down. The up…
