An incomplete Roman copper-alloy Hod Hill brooch (AD 43-75). The shaft of the pin is missing. The head of this brooch is curled forwards to accommodate an iron axis bar for the pin. The shaft of the copper-alloy pin is missing but the loop survives within the pin slot at the head. The head narrows in width and then expands to the bow which has side arms that are probably complete. At the front, the bow has a vertical rib flanked on either side by a vertical groove. This object consists of two main elements, a hinged plate and part of a lid or cover. The complete plate is roughly parallel in plan. Cast lead steelyard weight, square in plan and profile, forming a cube, with an inserted copper wire suspension loop. The wire is 1.5mm in diameter and therefore a similar diameter to copper wire used in electrical cabling in the post-war period. The weight weighs 45.69g which equates to 1.61 ounces averdepois and so is not very specific or accurate which perhaps suggests that the weight might have been suspended from fishing nets, rather than a steelyard. Biggs and Withers (2000) illustrate a hemispherical steelyard poise with an iron loop at the top on page 32, No.76, but this is …
