Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete post-medieval lead cloth seal of the Norwich Weavers' Company, circular, diameter 20.5mm. MT / BADL / LBGC / GC // N (only a small fragment of disc 2 extant). The twelve letters are the surname initials of the wardens of the Company for year 1671. Egan (1987, 409) gave the final four initials as CC / CC (see ibid. 189). The difference is not a matter of mistranscription but of the imprecision of 17th-century spelling, the two wardenss in question being: James Carrot, also appearing as Garrod, Carrit, Garret and Garrett; Matthew Cogine is also spelt Gogine and Cogny.
