Tinned cast copper alloy, symmetrical double-looped, oval, shoe buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The frame has rounded expanded ends and sides with moulded raised outer edges. The inside of the frame also has a moulded raised border above its bevelled inner edge and hollowed back so that it is lozenge-shaped in section. There is a moulded collar at the back of the frame around each of the spindle holes drilled into the frame where there is evidence of iron corrosion from the separate steel spindle, now missing. The spindle would have held a cast copper alloy chape a…

Cast copper alloy, symmetrical double-looped, sub-oval, shoe buckle with a simple, narrowed, offset pin bar. The frame is slightly raised at the junction between the frame and bar, at either end. The frame has rounded ends and slightly concave sides in plan. The inner edges are expanded where the pin rest is, and straight sided with a flat base so that the frame has a plano-convex profile in cross-section. On similar examples of this buckle type, the bar often has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with attachment stud to fix the buckle to a shoe, but on this example there is no plate.…

Cast copper alloy, symmetrical double-looped, sub-oval, shoe buckle with a simple, narrowed, offset bar. On either side of the bar the frame is raised at the junction between the two. The frame has rounded ends and concave sides in plan. The inner edges are expanded where the pin rest is, and straight sided with a flat base so that the frame has a plano-convex profile in cross-section. The bar has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with the edge of the hole remaining for the attachment stud to fix the buckle to a shoe. The pin and stud are now missing. The plate is corroded and torn at…

Cast copper alloy double-loop rectangular buckle frame. The frame is rectangular in plan, and plano-convex in section and profile, with a bevelled inner edge and sloping outside edge. The back of the frame is flat and flush with the back of the pin bar. The pin bar is narrowed and rounded so that is plano-convex in section. The pin is missing, but was likely made of iron as there are iron oxides attached to the back of the frame at one end. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 75, No.458, which is dated from c.1570-1700. Read (1988) illustrates another example, w…

Cast copper alloy D-shaped single-loop buckle with a narrowed offset bar which protrudes sightly at both ends and is defined by an incised line between the frame and where the bar ends. The frame is rectangular in section and expanded at its outer edge where there is a single transverse groove across the frame for pin. The pin and the folded sheet plate that would have attached to the bar are now both missing. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 59, No.243, which is dated from 1350 to 1450. Whitehead (1996) illustrates similar examples on page 18, Nos.40-41, which ar…

Cast copper alloy spectacle or double-loop oval buckle frame that is plano-convex in section with a bevelled inner edge and a pin bar that is flush with the surface of the frame. The pin is now missing. The original surface of the frame has mostly survived on the upper face as a dark green patina with traces of black lacquer, but the back of the buckle is more corroded. The buckle frame is 32 mm long, 23 mm wide and 2.2 mm thick, and the pin bar is 18 mm long, 2.2 mm wide and 2.2 mm thick. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 53, No.293, which is dated from c.1400-1650.

Cast copper alloy double-looped oval spectacle buckle with internally bevelled inside edge and widened exterior edges to each loop. The upper face of each loop has transverse, S-shaped, engraved lines defining a moulded leafy foliate pattern, emanating from a thin raised border that follows the inner edge of the frame. The pin bar is flush with the frame and the pin is now missing. The original surface has corroded away in areas but there are traces of matt black lacquer that have survived, which was used to protect the surface of the copper alloy (Whitehead, 1996, 8). Cast copper alloy small double-loop spectacle buckle frame, missing its pin. The pin bar is narrowed and flush with the frame and 2.3 mm in thickness. The frame has a flat base and a convex profile in cross-section with an internally bevelled edge and a sloping outer edge. The original surface still remains as darker green patches alternating with the lighter green corroded areas. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 53, No.294, which is dated from the 15th to the 16th century. Cast copper alloy double-looped sub-annular shoe or knee buckle, oval in plan, with a narrowed central pin bar which is slightly recessed from the frame. The frame has a hollow base and a convex profile, in cross-section, with a bevelled inside edge from the base. The pin is missing, together with any plate or strap. Most of the original surface of the frame has corroded away but there are the remains of black patches which suggest that the frame was lacquered, which was used to protect the surface of the copper alloy (Whitehead, 1996, 8). The frame is 28.8 mm long and 22 mm wide and …

Cast copper alloy double-looped sub-annular shoe or knee buckle, oval in plan, with a central pin bar which is recessed from the frame. The frame has a hollowed base and a convex profile, in cross-section, and a bevelled inside edge from the base. The pin is missing, together with any plate or strap, but would have been made of iron as there are areas of iron oxide on the pin bar and back of the frame. The original surface of the frame remains as dark green patches but most of it is corroded and pitted so that any surface treatment is unclear. The frame is 28.3 mm long and 22 mm wide …
