An incomplete cast copper-alloy medieval single-looped buckle which has an integral plate. The plate then terminates with an integral hook. The frame is trapezoidal in plan with the narrow edge having the integral plate. The opposite edge has a central notch. The integral plate has a perforation near what would be the strap bar, through which an elongated triangular pin is curled. The pin has a rectangular cross-section. A lead Post Office bag seal. Only one side bears a stamp, An oval frame containing a spreadeagle and an oval frame containing a Dolphin beneath two saltires.
This seal would have been used to secure the contents of mail bags or sacks. The seal bears in the oval shields the crest or arms of the senior and junior Postmaster General who held office from 1691-1708: Sir Robert Cotton, an eagle displayed, and his deputy Thomas Frankland, a dolphin embowed below two saltires in chief.
