The end of the hook has an expanded zoomorphic terminal with a lobed knop and a moulded crest. This mount would have been one of three that hooked through another larger mount at ri…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy rim fragment from a large bowl or cooking vessel with an internally bevelled rim that is semi-circular in section and narrows until it is flush with the body of the vessel. The body of the vessel curves downwards slightly to suggest a reasonably deep straight-sided bowl or a deep straight-sided everted rim, as seen on cauldrons, and the curvature of the rim suggests a large diameter of about 380 mm. But the rim has been bent out of shape so that the diameter is just an estimate. The bevelled rim itself is 4.3 mm thick which then tapers to the body which is 4 mm thic…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy spoon bowl and part of the stem, which would have been 'fig' shaped in plan when it was complete, but now pitted and corroded with damaged edges. Half of the bowl and three quarters of the stem are missing, but the shape and shallow curvature of the bowl in profile, and the stem that is cylindrical in section with a 'rat-tail' at its base where it joins the bowl, suggests it is Medieval in date. Read (1988) illustrates a similar spoon with a fig-shaped bowl and cylindrical stem on page 82, No.491, which is dated from the 15th century. Read (2001) il…
