An incomplete cast copper alloy Aesica brooch of Roman date. The brooch consists of semi-circular wings which are concave on the reverse to accommodate the pin mechanism which no longer remains. The bow extends from the centre of the front of the wings and is trapezoidal in plan with a raised profile to curve outwards. The bow terminates in a worn break.
The metal has a mid brownish-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 20.5mm long, 19.8mm wide, 2.8mm thick and weighs 4.7g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt p.310, fig.169 and are dated to the 1st century AD.
