Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment from a cast lead alloy seal matrix of late medieval date (1200-1400). The fragment is irregular in plan - originally being a pointed oval / vesica-shape. The broken edges are all old and abraded and a light grey coloured corrosion product is present. The design on the front face is lost - the central element comprised a vertical hollow sided shape - possibly a vertical cross which is enclosed by a slight incised border which echos the shape of the seal. The inscription is similarly lost - from what survives the following letters can be seen: [...]RD [...] ENO [...]. In the …

Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast iron shot, spherical in shape, with pitted surface, but with most of the surface iron corrosion product having fallen away since it was found, leaving the original object. The shot is about an inch and a quarter in diameter, or 39 mm, which could have been used by the smaller artillery pieces like the 'base', or small cannon, which was the smallest of the 'standard' list of guns of the late 16th century, at one and a quarter inch calibre, but equally could have been used as grape shot for some of the larger pieces. In the 17th century, during the Civil War, any iron object was us…

An incomplete, damaged and misshapen post-Medieval to Modern cast copper-alloy 'hawking' whistle (c. 1700-c. 1900 AD). The main body of the whistle is hollow and tubular in cross-section with a semi-circular sound hole at the top. Between the sound hole and the mouth-piece is a narrow collar and level with the collar, on the inside of the whistle, is a vertical baffle with a small aperture at the top. An incomplete copper-alloy artefact of probable Late Iron Age to Early Roman date. The piece is roughly 'L-shaped', a near vertical arm extending into the remains of pointed-oval plate. The arm is of semicircular section, the lower end flaring into a foot which has a groove around its damaged outer edge. At its top, the sides of the arm extend smoothly into the pointed-oval plate, just over half of which remains. An unidentified lead-alloy artefact of probable Medieval or post-Medieval date. The artefact takes the form of a squashed cylinder, open at one end, the other end closed but for a central aperture. A base sherd from a Roman ceramic vessel. The base is flat and has wavy comb marks on its underside. The side forms an angle of approximately 60 degrees with the base and has rilling on its inner face, providing evidence of wheel throwing. The fabric is off-white with a creamy brown core, sand-tempered and has occasional grog inclusions. Dimensions: diameter of base (remaining): 71.4mm; surviving height: 31.8mm; weight: 70.61g. This would appear to be a sherd of Verulamium-region white ware, a coarseware produced in the St. Albans area during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The st…
